Protest held outside Georgian Embassy in Armenia over delays at border checkpoint

More than 17 trucks carrying wine and brandy are currently stranded at the Armenian-Georgian border checkpoint. The delays prompted a protest outside the Georgian Embassy in Yerevan on Tuesday.

Speaking at the demonstration, Gayane Poghosyan, an export specialist at the Proshyan Brandy Factory, deplored unjustified inspections by Georgian authorities.

"Georgia is a transit country. The shipments are destined for Russia and Belarus, so such checks are unnecessary," Poghosyan said, adding some trucks have not been inspected at all.

Previously, the factory was able to export up to seven truckloads per day. That number has now dropped to just two per week.

The company has appealed to Armenia's Ministry of Economy, but has yet to receive an official response.

Exporters are now calling on Georgian authorities to clarify the reasons for the delays.
